Chapter 6 - Format and Presentation

Format and Presentation

Format and other Parts of the Curriculum Design Process

The data gathered from the needs and environment analysis that every teacher should perform at the beginning of every different course, and also the principles and objectives set can be determined by the format and presentation.

Guidelines for Deciding a Format

Format and presentation must take account of the environment in which the course will be used, the needs of the learners, and the principles of teaching and learning. According to the reading and real fact is the problem when presenting or communicating the main objectives and reasons of a course. It is very important to present a course, and that this one shows the goals and the reason why of every activity and the main goal of it, and that could be seen and understand by others.

The Four Strands

As seen previously, it is important that a language course provides a balanced range of opportunities for the learning process. The reason for the four strands is to check on this balance and should be given a same amount of time.

Meaning-focused Input

This strand involves having the opportunity to learn from listening and speaking that is called learning from a comprehensible input.

Meaning-focused output

This strand involves learning though speaking and writing activities, learning by input alone is not sufficient because the knowledge needed to comprehend input does not include all the knowledge which is needed to produce.

Language-focused Learning

This strand involves a deliberate focus on language features such as pronunciation, spelling, word parts, vocabulary, collocations, grammatical constructions and discourse features. Most people focus their course only on this portion which is not correct, because it only should be spent a quarter of the entire time.

Fluency Development

This strand involves making the best use of what is already known and how it should be applied. Most people believe this strand involves having a huge bucket of vocabulary, but it is not correct thus it involves applying the already known features and apply them in a fluent way.
